What is CES and the function?

The CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation) is a portable cranial electrotherapy device that employs small currents of electricity for the treatment of stress and stress related disorders, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. It is also currently being used in the treatment of PTSD.

Stress is Human’s number one health problem. According to the American Medical Association, stress is implicated in 80% of all illness, and stress related problems account for 90% of our visits to primary-care physicians.

The unit's sole source of current are common 1.5 - 9 volt batteries. Its intensity is limited — no more than is required to run a small toy or a penlight. Even when turned to maximum intensity, it is not harmful. It is suggested, however, that until you become fully acclimated to your unit, you maintain the intensity at a lower setting.

Research conducted throughout the 20th century has demonstrated that the brain makes use of electrical activity; thus, one can affect mental functions by affecting the organ's electrical activity.

During CES, an electric current is focused upon the hypothalamic region; during this process, CES electrodes are placed behind the ear at the mastoid, or clipped to the portion of the earlobe, near to the face. CES treatment promotes an increase in endorphins; note, scientists remain unsure why this occurs. The current results in an increase of the brain's levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, and a decrease in its level of cortisol. When CES is effective, users are in an "alert, yet relaxed" state, characterized by alpha brain waves.

Effectiveness
Most users report a decrease in anxiety during treatment, and many other report a decrease in anxiety as much as two days later. Some users report a euphoric feeling; they report that their bodies feel "lighter", their thinking is clearer, and that they are more creative.

A minority of users require five to ten treatments to achieve any effect.
